Default Cruise through Alaska
Hi!

we are debating between 3 boats for Alaska. 2 are HAL (other is NCL pearl)

Which HAL boat do you prefer? The statendam or oosterdam?

All 3 possibilites have stops we like and we dont mind which port to leave or arrive to. So to narrow it down we need to choose the boat we like better.
What are your opinions of each? pros and cons?

Extra points if you can compare the NCL pearl too

thanks!

The Oosterdam is much newer than Statendam and therefore has more to offer as far as the ship goes. But then in Alaska is isn't about the ship and since Statendam is smaller it may offer a better cruise since there will be fewer passengers aboard. But bear in mind Statendam is 22 years old and Oosterdam is only 10 years old. Even with refurbishments some things on the older ship will be dated.

thanks dave!

I think we narrowed it down to the NCL pearl and HAL Oosterdam.

it seems as both have pros and cons for what we are looking for. we are fairly young (25) although we enjoy activities, bingo, name that tune, etc. We also loved the shows we saw on RCI. Oosterdam seems like a nicer ship for what we want than the Statendam. But not sure if the Pearl is the ship for us. (We did the NCL sky and it was a bunch of drunk college kids, it was definitely not for us! also the entertainment was mediocre at best.) just nervous about doing NCL again.

Pearl- r/t seattle cheaper airfare. more entertainment on ship.

OOsterdam- more expensive airfare. views of Vancouver and Anchorage sailing through those passages.

not sure which to book!

Holland America has more experience with Alaska cruises than does Norwegian, but you should also note that HAL also has a different age demographic and tends to attract more older cruisers than does Norwegian. As far as drinking goes - the ships spend a lot of their time in Alaskan state waters which means they have to comply with state drinking laws. You don't see a lot of partying on Alaskan cruises no matter the cruise line you choose. For one thing the weather is so unpredictable that you won't see people laying around the open decks or around the pools. The southern area of Alaska is a rain forest, so it can rain every day for a little bit, or not at all. It can be 60 degrees one day, and 40 the next.

If you are 25 you might prefer the Norwegian Pearl over Oosterdam.

what about the ship entertainment? do HAL have nightly shows/ entertainment.

we are leaning toward the oosterdam because we get to see the inside passage as well as Anchorage and Vancouver. However, we do enjoy good entertainment on a ship and was wondering what HAL day and night entertainment is like?

HAL has entertainment and shows, but it isn't a strong point for them. Standard things and nothing new or innovative. Lounge singers, a band or two, a 'big show' that is a musical revue.

But then since an Alaska cruise is really all about seeing that state and it's waterways, and the ship is just a conveyance and hotel, you should look more at the ports you want to see and not so much which ship you take. In the Caribbean the ship can be the destination. In Alaska, it isn't.

ports are our first priority of course. that is why we limited it to two ships.

HAL oosterdam and NCL pearl. although one is r/t seattle and one is Anchorage/vancouver to ports they stop in are the same. so our next priority after the ports is the ship as well as the crowd.
