I'm going on my first cruise, a three week cruise. I am a news junkie. Should I expect to experience withdrawals.

Welcome to cruise-chat.

I can't speak to withdrawal symptoms but I can tell you most cruise lines have at least one of the 24 hour cable news networks on the cabin televisions. However, signal strength can be a problem depending on the ship's location and satellite reception. It is not uncommon for channels to be unavailable for hours at a time.

There is also the internet aboard the ship, where you could pull up news websites to keep up with things. Bear in mind the internet will cost extra.

Please tell me you aren't going on a 21 day cruise with plans to watch CNN all day! http://cruise-chat.com/groupee_commo...s/icon_eek.gif

Thanks for your reply Dave. I never intended to watch, especially CNN, 24/7 but I do hope to get a news update now and then. It sounds like I will be able to, even with the interuptions.

Thanks!!

Hi AnniesMom, welcome to Cruise-Chat. Not only will you have CNN, when available, they'll have a Channel from the states with local news. We had one from Denver on one of our cruises. Anything really exciting, they will put in the news letters you receive in your cabin daily. I do hope that you will enjoy your cruise, though. Too much depressing news lately. Hope you have a fantastic time!

And don't forget about picking up a local newspaper from port ~ I find it interesting to read the local news along with the international news. And it's always an "eye opener" to see the non-American perspective on things.

Thanks Susanmaz. I appreciate you comments. Just 3 more days!! = )

Welcome aboard! Twenty-one nights! What is the itinerary?

Yes, there will be news channels... usually CNN International. There should also be an 8-page (or so) New York Times excerpt available at the front desk. There's not a whole lot in there, but it's good for the basics.

I like susanmaz' idea of buying a paper in port, also! http://bestsmileys.com/thumbs/7.gif

I don't know if the above link of my itinerary will work, but I'm cruising on the Oosterdam from Ft. Lauderdale, through the Panama Canal, and ending in San Diego, with many stops in between.

And thanks for your response. = )

HAL has a daily newspaper (excerpts from the New York Times) which will be delivered to your cabin each morning along with other "junk". If you don't get a newspaper, you can pick one up at the front desk or in the Library.

It has all the latest news, crossword, sports scores, market updates, etc. etc.

This is not to be confused with the daily program which will be in your cabin each evening along with a chocolate on your pillow http://cruise-chat.com/groupee_commo...icon_smile.gif.

Enjoy the Oosterdam - she's a lovely ship.

Yes. I had no idea what was going on in the world. When I went on the Grandeur they had daily news that you could pick up by guest relations. This told little snippets of what was going on. I looked for this on the Serenade, but they didn't have it.

For TV we had CNN and Fox. Those were the only news channels. The other channels were RCTV and showed the same movies and TV shows over and over. We did hear occasional news from CNN and Fox, but I really did feel out of touch like I didn't know anything that was going on, including the days-of-the-week! Not that that's a bad thing. After all, I was on vacation!
