It's like the black market for 3.5 gallon toilets and the soon-to-be smuggling of big screen televisions into California.
Can you see people trying to get inside info from a Walmart employee? "Hey, I heard from Lennie in shipping. We're getting a shipment of Eggo's in tomorrow morning. I'll pull four boxes off the pallet and hold them for you. Meet me by the deli counter at 10am."
I bought Eggos for the first time a couple of weeks ago, when my cousins were visiting from out of town and I heard their daughter likes them. I had no idea there is/was a shortage. I'll have to look again next time I shop, just for the heck of it.
I have most of the box left. The kid never ate 'em. I tried one, and the rest remain. They're the whole grain kind.
What's really funny is the bid on ebay is now at $9.50 (reserve not met)! This is the same box of blueberry ones I had in my freezer. I guess I ate nearly $5 worth of waffles yesterday. Dang! I could of almost went to Denny's.
I can report that both Wal-Mart and Bi-Lo in N. Myrtle Beach, SC are fully stocked with Eggos in all varieties. There are no limits posted for purchase. However, Bi-Lo did have a note posted on the freezer case to expect shortages.
Wal-Mart did run out of .40/lb. frozen turkeys though (I didn't like the brand anyway). So I headed to Bi-Lo for the .49/lb turkeys (Honeysuckle brand) which required a $25 additional purchase. I was joking with meat manager about it and he told them to let me have the turkey w/o the $25 additional purchase. I was glad as I had already bought my other fixin's.
I get home and see this on the news. I hope I wasn't the straw that caused it. Sorry for the waffling.
You could easily be an eBay millionaire. Just find a commercial freezer someplace, buy up all those Eggos in North Myrtle Beach, and you are on your way to being a big player in the Eggo market. When they get up to $20 a box you'll be rolling in money and booking category 12 suites.
