...lock and load!

I recall an incident from about 20 years ago when a drug smuggler's ship was stopped by the USS Mississippi in the Caribbean. The Mississippi was a nuclear powered guided missile cruiser (since scrapped). Look at the armament array here .

The drug smugglers didn't take long to surrender.

I served in USS Texas, which was a sister of the Mississippi, before I moved to the Nimitz.

(trivia - "in" is the appropriate word in naval parlance, as opposed to "on")

Better than having to serve on the outside of the ship I guess.

I saw a photo on break.com today of a Fantasy-class deck plan, apparently outside an elevator. The "you are here" had either been photo shopped or had actually slipped and was a couple inches outside the ship.

Legally, the U.S. Congress could hire privateers or do whatever they want. One of the enumerated powers of Congress in the Constitution:

"To declare war, grant letters of marque and reprisal, and make rules concerning captures on land and water"

I love the idea of Letters Of Marque. These are in essence what allows mercenaries to exist.

People really need to read the history of Jean and Pierre Lafitte to truly understand privateering at its best.

Or Captain Kidd to understand privateering at it's worst.
