Something strange seems to be happening....When I first visited America during December many years ago everyone used
to say " Merry Christmas " or " Happy Christmas ".....Things seem to have changed....
Now it seems to be" Happy Holidays " and I don't really understand why everybody seems to accept that these are the best words to be used for christmas. I know it is meant to represent the 3 public holidays at this time ( Xmas day, Boxing day & New Years day )
I saw Britney Spears on TV saying Happy Holidays.....why on earth didn't she just say merry christmas & have a happy new year ?
Even the big stores are at it.....I honestly believe that nobody is going to be offended by the traditional christmas greeting being used by those that want to.
If you follow this line of thinking then children might as well be given holiday presents rather than christmas presents.
If you still believe that you should be able to say Merry Christmas then you had better make a stand because otherwise those words will in the end be forgotten except by a few seniors in their retirement homes.
Well said, Jack. It is a great source of annoyance to me when people try to snuff out all vestiges of Christmas under their usual phony guise of "not wanting to offend anyone". In many cases this malcontents are just trying to evoke a reaction and get some perverse pleasure in ruining things for others.
The forum staff endorses this thread but I want to remind everyone posting to it that we cannot allow things to get into a discussion of religions. Let's stay on track please. Remember we have terms of service to follow.

Actually, it's a misguided attempt to cover Christmas and any of the holidays celebrated this time of year by those not of the Christian faith. Many in the States, including those in the latter group, find this silly. I can't see how anyone can be offended by the warm wishes for peace, joy, and love that accompany the "Merry Christmas" greeting.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people in the U.S. that are far too willing to be offended by the slightest thing. It's called political correctness by some, I call it an infringement of free speech at worst and a watering down of the language at best.
I will add my Merry Christmas to all. If you celebrate Christmas, I hope it's a wonderful holiday for you. If you don't celebrate Christmas, I hope the spirit of Christmas, the joy, caring about others, and family togetherness permeates however you spend these last, waning days of the current year.
And, of course, my best wishes for a happy, healthy, and dare we hope prosperous 2009 for all.
