I read about this on a news website. A US couple, got off a med cruise, and were at a train station. A man who was in his 50's, befriended them. After a while, the man offered to buy the couple a coffee, and they accepted. The man had drugged the coffee, and the couple fell asleep and where robbed. Then the man woke up, and was still incoherent, and bewildered and instead of walking to the train platform, he walked into a train and was killed. How sad... I was also watching a show , called "Ultimate Tourist Scams". This man was on a train, and a younger lady sat next to him, and they started chatting. She offered him a tasty treat, that was drugged. He fell asleep, and was also robbed. I have only ever had one attempt at robbery to me, I was in Milan. These two women distracted us with a newspaper in our face, while another person tried to get into our purse. I cocked my fist back and screamed, and they ran off. I think it's sad, that we have to be so skeptical of a person's kindness, but you never know. Has anyone ever seen that show, "Ultimate Tourist Scams". It is very eye opening. Lil' Lori

Yeah, I was reading the article about the elderly couple in Rome. It's so unfortunate that something like that can happen to someone so unsuspecting. I have been to Rome several times and have never had a problem but you never know. At least they caught the criminal who murdered the man. He will be dealt with harshly in the Italian legal system.

Not to pick on just Italy but if anybody approached me in any country for anything it's always for a scam. Pickpockets, selling me knockoff junk, begging, etc. I suppose it's just me but when I travel anywhere, I assume that being a tourist someone is trying to part me with my money.

Hi we have been to Italy quite a few times and always felt safe. The only country we have been to and did not feel safe in any part of it was Egypt a place I always wanted to visit and whan we finally went there I was so disappointed not in the sights but in the attitudes of everyone they only wanted to scam money out of you and intimated you in to spending money, including the tourist police and officals so anyone plannng on visiting do not go out alone or in couples large groups are your best bet.

A scam I heard of in Egypt is the camel ride. They give you a terrific price to get you to ride one & the camel takes off running for a few miles into the dessert & then they charge you $50 to get back.

Another version of the camel is they get you on one for a photo, and then the camel won't let you off until you pay the ransom. It will keep trying to bite you if you attempt to dismount.

This is not much different than the jerk with the pony on St. Thomas, up in the hills by the overlook of the town. People would get on the pony and then had to pay a price to get off.

No disrespect to any members who might be affiliated with PETA (o.k. maybe a little disrespect intended), but I pity the camel that refuses to let me off it's back and heaven forbid it try to bite me. You would be able to attribute one camel casualty to me. I am sure this would land me in trouble with the local authorities but no four-legged varmint is going to hold me captive.

Heres a good one. When we were in Marrakesh last summer. They actually put a snake around our son's neck and took our picture, as we protested. They demanded money. My husband took out some coins to give to them. There reply was "no, paper money". We kept our coins, laughed and just walked off. They got a lot of nerve. Insisting we pay them, for a service we did not want and objected too. Lil' Lori

You should probably direct the retaliation to the idiot that trained the Camel.
