The cruise-chat forum is saddened by the news that Walter Cronkite has died at the age of 92. How ironic that his death occurs as the nation remembers the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. I remember being riveted to the TV screen during that mission, hanging on every word Cronkite said.

No politics please. This thread is about honoring a legendary newsman and broadcasting giant.

He was a great one. i remember him best for some of his Vietnam Reports, I was there around that time.

Uncle Walter was part of my growing up years. I remember him getting choked up when President Kennedy was assassinated. I remember his reporting during Apollo 11. When he spoke, I had tremendous confidence in what he was saying.

I remember when he retired to his boat, named "Assignment," and how I loved that when he retired, he said he'd be on Assignment.

I was never a fan of Dan Rather; I think I just missed Uncle Walter.

Edited to correct name of boat.

Trully one of the giants of the industry; very sad indeed.

Gosh, We had supper with Walter Cronkite every night when I was a young girl. It is almost like losing a family member.
I remember when President Kennedy was killed, he was there, when American landed on the moon, he was there. Every night we got our updates on the Vietnam war from him...We lost a great journalist today.

It was perhaps a simpler time, when families ate dinner together and part of it was having the CBS news playing in the background. Maybe some had the NBC Huntley/Brinkley report playing, as was my families preference. But whatever, it was a time when network news was vital and we all trusted the anchors.

As macmom said, it is like losing a member of the family...like having an uncle or great-grandfather die.

It shows the respect this man had among us, that we think of him in this way.

May he rest in peace. This legendary news man's broadcasts were a nightly event growing up. When the news came on my great grandmother would "shush" us kids. "They're giving the news" she'd say. I remember sitting on the floor beside the couch watching all the Apollo 11 landing news.

I think Uncle Walter is a fitting way to relate to him.

Walter will be long remembered by all of us. He was "the" newsman of his generation and he set the standard for responsible reporting for all that have followed since. I grew up with him - Does anyone here remember him when he hosted "You Are There" on the B/W tvs? His style of broadcasting is not easily replaced. Rest in Peace Walter - our thoughts are with your family!

I'm glad you're here to tell the tale!

I watched the moon landing from my cousins' living room in a Boston suburb, where I was staying the weekend while I visited my fiance in Boston. It was unusual hearing Walter's voice describe something other than the war, and the other dire news of the day.
