Stearman Fly-In

Galesburg, IL, which is about 8 miles from where I live, hosts an annual Stearman Fly-In in Sept. of each year. It is such a special sight to see the Stearmans flying overhead! I am going to try to post a few pictures I took today. I was using my smartphone, and it's smarter than I am so some pictures aren't too great. But you get the idea! Dave, I know you were in the Navy, so I thought of you when I took the yellow Navy one.

There is also a picture of a 1929 Tri-Motor.

Well, that didn't work! I used to have instructions on how to post from webshots.com, but I lost them.

I guess if you click on each picture you can see it, otherwise I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Anyway, it was a nice day to enjoy the Stearman Fly-In.

There is something magical about old airplanes. They were so basic. The pilot school at a local private airport has a biplane that they take passengers up in for rides. I think it is a Stearman too. They won't rent it to anyone.

They were selling tickets for rides in a bi-plane and also the Tri-Motor. We have been in both over the years, but our son went up in the Tri-Motor for the first time. He was enthralled! The biplane tickets were sold out for the day. Maybe he can ride in one next year.

It is just so neat to be in our backyard and have the bi-planes fly over in formation. We never get tired of it!

Nadine.....Great shots...Thank You....It has been too many years since I've gone up in a Stearman....I had a friend at the FAA who owned one......We did many flights, including cross country, Sadly He passed away and the bird still flys under anothers skills!! I would love to catch a hop in an old trimotor......as a child My favorote model kit was that of a Ford Trimotor with wheels or skis made by Monogram!! What great fun to fly in an Old Bird...Total Pilot's Delight!!!

The Stearman Fly In is held in Galesburg, IL the weekend after Labor Day. I think there were about 60 Stearmans this year.

That is neat that you had a friend who owned one. They are magical!

I think the most fun I had flying was when I was in Marine aviation and we got to go up in a C-117 they had at MCAS Yuma. For those not knowing, this was a military version of a DC-3. Love those tail draggers.

Dave......As time passes We older aviators get Our Aircraft numbers mixed up!!! I am sure the C-117 of Your memory was, most likely, a C-47 (DC-3) or Gooney Bird or Puff (all referring to the same type of airframe)! In the late 60's there were still a few of these birds pulling active duty tours.....I managed to get some second seat time in a C-47 over 'Nam....truly a great and sturdy bird!!! It sure could take a beating and keep on ticking!!!

It was like a flying Buick Special. Not very fast but smooth and elegant.

Now I know why I still drive a Buick!!!!
