Ford To End Mercury Brand

Ford will end production of Mercury vehicles by the end of this year.

I understand the logic but still hate it. I've quite often felt the Mercury versions of the vehicles looked better than the Fords. And then there were stand alone Mercury models over the years too.

GM did it too with the Pontiacs. It was down to Ford cutting a not all that popular brand and vehicle duplication. The Marquis were basically a Lincoln without some bells and whistles. They had a terrible history of retaining value.

I'm sad they are selling the Volvo brand to China's Geely. I wish someone else would have bought it and returned it to it's former glory and reputation.

Anyone remember the Merkur?

Yes, I remember the Merkur. I thought they were oddly curious but never got the urge to buy one.

I never had an urge to buy a Merkur either. I couldn't have afforded one if I had wanted to. A guy I know that was doing well (at the time) in the real estate business bought one. It stayed at the Ford dealership's garage more than it did in his. The thinking was in those days you had to have an expensive new foreign car to show you are a successful real estate agent. I've written more contracts driving my old Grand Am than I have while driving my Volvo.
