So - the last of the legendary Kennedy siblings have passed.

They're truly the most well known american family over here in Norway, and norwegian press have from time to time described the Kennedys as the closest the US get to a royal family.

Is this a thought you could agree upon?

The Kennedy family has truly had it's share of sadness. As far as royalty, I wouldn't say so. They definitely are well-known and rooted in politics. The father was a whiskey runner/producer and hung with a very tough crowd. They're a very well connected family. It seems most Americans hold movie stars in higher regard, close to royalty. You should have seen the news coverage/fiasco about Michael Jackson. Of course, this is my opinion, only.

My thoughts and prayers to the surviving family and friends.

This is something that most Americans have been expecting for the past year, and given recent press reports it was clear that the end was imminent. And so it was.

I think it safe to say that most Americans had strong opinions of Ted Kennedy - both positive and negative. There wasn't much middle ground. However it is a testament to the man that despite his liberal views, he counted many of the most conservative members of the Senate as his personal friends. When Richard Nixon died, Bill Clinton delivered a very eloquent eulogy, in which he called for an end to judging Nixon on anything but his entire life and career. I think the same should be said of Ted Kennedy.

The image of the Kennedy family as American royalty can mostly be attributed to the musical Camelot coming out during JFK's term in office, it's music being popular with both JFK and Jackie, and then ultimately when Jackie compared her murdered husband's time as President to that of Camelot and the media and mourning public embraced it and the family. Here is one of many internet versions of the story.

The forum staff invites others to comment on the death of Ted Kennedy. Please keep in mind our rules about politics and disruptive posts.

Thanks.

Being of a "certain age" - since reading of Mr. Kennedy's passing, I've had this feeling of the true passing of an era. As far as I can remember, there has been the Kennedy "mystique" - history and stories; the "where were you" questions, the Jackie O stories, the children, grandchildren, aunts and uncles, Grandmother Rose - and so on. It seems like not only the passing of an era but the final passing of my youth.

They have often been described that way here as well. It was a sad day to hear of him passing.

Actually, one sibling still survives, Jean Kennedy Smith. Read about her here.

Sandy - Thank You for the lead to the info on Jean Kennedy Smith - it was a bright spot to an otherwise sad day and a great update to the continuing legacy of the Kennedy family and their contribution to the USA!

I'm sure many of you saw the tributes on the news, but seeing the Kennedy motorcade first hand was astonishing. The streets were literally lined with people for 70 miles.
I was fortunate to get on the highway just ahead of the procession. People had stopped their cars on the highway in both direction. They were running across the road. The rest areas were full. The bridges and over passes.
They had flags, hats, bumper sticker etc. Love them or hate them, Ted was essentially the end of the Camlelot era.

I was raised to stop for processions to pay respect. Even if you don't know the deceased. I think it is just the way it should be.
