cheque imaging
So over here in the UK we are talking about making cheque imaging as another method of payment happen.
Now I hear that this is already in use in America but just wondered how often it is really used. From what I understand you just take a picture of a cheque with a smartphone and send it to your bank where it gets put into your account.

Do people still use cheques ? I thought most transactions were by credit card/debit card or by paypal.
Do you know anyone who uses cheque imaging and is it something that's useful ?

Paper checks are still widely used. Electronic checks are also used as a form of online payment. Some banks have the imaging feature for people to deposit checks in their accounts. Also, some businesses will convert a payment made with a paper check into an electronic debit.

Ironically, many are returning to using paper checks and currency for transactions because of all the credit and debit card fraud, such as the current fiasco with Target stores. Seems the old ways are more secure.

In Canada cheques are not allowed to be used in stores. You can only use cheques for personal reasons or for mailing in a bill payment. No store will accept cheques. This was put in place about 10 years ago. We may write 1 or 2 cheque a year.

I will say I do love to take a picture of a check and make a deposit from home. That is wonderful that my bank does that.

I still use checks for my doctor copays, and one check a month for my health insurance premium bill. My employer has health insurance, but doesn't help with the cost. I still live at home, so I am on the COBRA plan as an overage dependent. My other bills I use my bank's online bill pay feature.
