Up until this past Friday, possession or sale of beer with an alcohol content >6% was illegal in Alabama. Governor Riley finally signed the recently passed bill which will allow malt beverages of up to 13.9% to be sold. This will bring many specialty brews to the state, and this is a great victory for beer connoisseurs.

Earlier, the governor signed another law which will allow wine to have up to 16.5% alcohol. Previously the limit was 14.9%.

I've never understood the logic for laws which limit alcohol levels. It's like the old "3.2" beer laws. They didn't prevent someone from getting drunk if that was their goal. They just drank more.

Now we will be able to enjoy more choices in beer and wine.

That 14.9% limit on wine must have eliminated a lot of fine ports and sherrys; aren't they usually in the 15% to 20% range?

Alabama - surprise - has a very complex liquor code. The new law is for "table" wines. Port and sherry are/were classified as "fortified" wines and were already legal but only for sale in package stores if I understand the law correctly. Thus some brands could not be sold in restaurants. With the new law I guess some ports and sherrys will now be in the same category as "table" wines and thus legal for consumption in restaurants.

Another bill that didn't pass proposed removing this silly "table" "fortified" nonsense.

drlivingston is very much more the wine connoisseur though (I am certainly not). Perhaps he can offer guidance and correction here.

Sounds very confusing; leave it to the bureaucrats! I like Harvey's Bristol Cream once in a while--it's 17.5%. Amazing the things you can find on Google!

I'm not a big sherry drinker, however I do like Harvey's Bristol Cream. It was the first one I tried and I liked it, so that is my brand.

Congrats Dave! http://cruise-chat.com/groupee_commo...on_biggrin.gif

I can't believe South Carolina actually beat Alabama to this. They finally changed ours in 2007. Hey, it hasn't been that long since we got rid of the stupid mini-bottle law.

And they announced they're going to increase the tax on beer by $2
