At the latest TVA board meeting, it was announced that the cleanup costs for the Kingston Steam Plant ash pond spill may approach 825 million dollars. As with anything else related to a business operation, the consumer will ultimately bear the cost. Looks like the utility rates for me, Penny, and some other members will be increased before the year is over. I can almost guarantee it. Ironically, the board reduced our rates by 7% starting on April 1 (lower oil costs) but that will not last long.

The board also voted to eliminate all executive bonuses, and also all corporate incentives for non-union employees for the current fiscal year.

In the Decatur paper last night they said it was going to be $1.4B for the clean-up, so you know we'll get burned. We've already had the highest utilities bills of any state I've ever lived in this winter. Come on lottery http://cruise-chat.com/groupee_commo...on_biggrin.gif

Our last two electric bills...$499 and $405. These reflecting the 20% increase TVA imposed last fall. We did have a lot of cold days during these periods (all that global warming you know) but our all time record prior to these was $390.

If Your Electricity Comes From Progress Energy- Get Ready:

We recieve our energy from Progress Energy here in Orlando,FLa. That is true for many other residents in Orlando and elsewhere in Central Florida (and maybe further away).

Progress Energy requested and received approval for a rate hike increase to the average electric bill by as much as 25%.

They justified this rate hike by saying it will cover the costs of constructing a new nuclear power plant they say they need. I am not sure if it will cost as much as the disaster TVA is cleaning up. But who knows?

A new nuclear plant will cost at least 2 billion and probably closer to 3 billion.

We have a power plant on Cape Cod slated to be closed. Not only will our electricity be more costly, but they are also a huge taxpayer in my town. Not to mention employer.
There has been such a backlash against any updates or expansions to power plants and yet every one wants to plug in.
They think those stick on light switches come with the electricity built in.
They also want to put hundreds of windmills in our sound. Wind power has never lived up to it's expectations and when the private company who wants to build it goes belly up, the taxpayers will once again get stuck holding the bag. Not a huge issue on dry land, but when you toss in the corrosive properties of sea water, I see the potential for our own home grown clean-up expense.

Power demand is ever-increasing and the alternate energy people think we need to shut off current technology right now, even though alternate sources are still years away from being viable on a large scale. It's like saying battery cars will be common in 20 years so let's ban combustion engines now so we'll be ready.

penny3333 02-16-2009 01:14 PM

Amen, Dave. Windfarms, solar, etc., are not ready for mainstream use. Yes, we definitely need alternative energy sources, but for right now, we need to use our present technology. In order to do that, sometimes we need expansion.
