We will be cruisng on the Norwegian Sea on Mar. 27th. I would like to find out if the kids need to have their passports together with the birth certificates. Been getting inconsistent info from NCL; most of the reps said that birth certificates should do for the kids. Also, any helpful hints on how to make this an enjoyable cruise for our family? Need some helpful advice especially because of our 11-month baby. Thanks!

If your children have valid passports, I would recommend using them instead of the birth certificates. They do have to have photo IDs along with birth certificates, and as the passport covers for both forms of ID, it's much easier to just use those. Same for adults, by the way. Definitely bring the birth certificate (not a hospital one, but the official raised-seal one from the county or state) for the baby. Photo ID is not necessary for an infant.

Are both of the legal parents traveling with the children? If any of them have a parent that is not coming with you, you must have a notarized statement from that parent giving permission to take the child out of the country. The specific cruise and destination should preferably be mentioned. Some countries, Mexico included, are stringent about that rule.

Karen,
Thanks for the prompt response. I do not want to pay for passports if we can just get by with the birth certificates. I've called Travelocity and NCL and both companies say that birth certs are ok for the minors. I just want to get an opinion from someone who actually experienced some hassles at the port because they did not bring passports for the kids. Any suggestions as for things we can do as a family while on shore or on the ship?

Their advice is right, birth certs are fine. Just make sure they are govt-issued, not hospital ones, and not xerox copies of the originals. And the teens will need a photo ID of some sort, preferably govt issue (like a driver's license.) If they are not old enough for a license, you can use a school ID or something similar, in case you are asked to provide one for them. Hassles at the port occur because 1) people have the wrong form of ID, or 2) they get an overzealous and/or inexperienced agent to check them in, who has been told what ID is needed, and won't budge an inch from the exact spec's they were told.

As far as excursions - best to check out the port reviews on this site, and also past posts on cruise-chat. And don't be afraid to get off the ship in Roatan, assuming you are going there. It's a beautiful island, English-speaking, and has lovely beaches. I'd recommend excursions through the ship in most places, though, just to make sure no one gets lost and left behind! Have a great time!
