We will be on the NCL Pearl for the May 20th Alaska trip and would like to get a feel for the ports of call and what you all suggest to do. Looks ports of Juneau, Skagway, Ketchican, Victoria.
We are considering booking direct with Captain Larry-Whale Watching..Island Wings-Sea Plane for starters.
How about Skagway?
All and any advice is greatly welcomed. The Alaska cruise season in gearing up and we need a headstart to the fun and action.
I don't know about NCL excursions, but I went to Alaska with Princess and in Skagway I took the old railway train up the mountain. That was a fabulous trip.
There's really too many good excursions to choose from on Alaskan cruises. It's a shame you can't do all of them.
You've selected one of the best already. Captain Larry's Whale Watching almost always find whales.
At Skagway, the White Pass & Yukon RR is a great choice, specially for those who love riding trains. The scenery from the train is awsome. You can ride the train up and down the mountains, or one way. Other excursions allow you to do other activities and ride the train. It is a bit boring to ride the train both ways, although you do get to switch sides on the way back, which does help the boring factor a bit. As they say on the train, those on the buses stop to take photos of the train, but the train doesn't stop so you can take photos of the buses. I would recommend a combo train excursion at Skagway. There's plenty of time to walk the town to shop when the train gets back.
At Victoria, I suggest taking the Gardens excursion.
At Ketchican, the Logging Camp excursion is interesting, as well as the Totem Pole tour. Ketchican is another port you can go shopping at.
If you have time after the Captain's Larry tour, I highly suggest taking the tram up Mount Roberts, specially on a clear day. The views of Juneau and the surrounding area is awsome up there. There's also a bird santuary near the tram ride, since they often are caring for injuried eagles, you may get very close to one.
Have a great cruise.
We are a party of six, also booked on the May 20 departure NCL Sun.
We have booked the Yukon Rail and Bus excursion from Chilkoot Charters and Tours, Skagway, AK.
Phone (907) 983-3400. Or check them out on the web.
This is a combination tour...bus one way and rail the other.
Departure time is 7:30 am.
The tour takes about 7 hours and includes lunch.
Price is $165 per person.
Have read good reviews of this trip, but we'll find out when we get there.
Good luck on your search.

We are also on the NCL Pearl May 20th, 2007. It's a great ship.
We have booked the following:
Ketchican-Misty Fords Float Plane rental party of 4
Juneau-Capt Larry Whale Watching
Skagway-White Pass RR
Victoria is a short stop. 6:00 PM to Midnight. Dock is about 2 miles from center of city. The City of Victoria has a beautiful park with lots of flowers, it is free. You can book Buchart Gardens, but will have to be on a bus as a group. Plenty of shopping in Victoria, Wax Museam, China Town, lots of great restaurants. The Empress Hotel for fine dining and English Tea. The stop is short, so suggest you enjoy the city. Pedicabs are great for a personal tour and party of two, very romantic. There is also a Victoria Harbor cruise on a small boat. We are considering harbor cruise as I have been to Victoria three other times.
The White Pass Railroad in Skagway is outstanding...we've done it twice..once with snow and once without it...It's a 3 hour trip and you still have lots of time to shop in town. Juneau I would do the Mendenhall Glacier if it's your first time there. Ketchikan we did the Cultural and Totem Pole tour, which was also a very informative tour. Some tours are very pricey, but what the heck, it's Alaska and it's more of a religious experience than anything else.....Enjoy.....
