Just received an email ad from NCL for trans-atlantic cruises. One was for the Dream from Europe to Miami. Dream is what we are sailing out on from Houston in 25 days, so I gto curious as to what if any ship would be sailign from Houston in 2007. I could not find one.

So, does this mean that NCL is abandoning Houston/Galveston? Does anyone know? In fact, I could not find a Dream cruise in the oct to nov 2007 timeframe. Maybe she is going into drydock for referb?

It looks like they are pulling out of Houston, at least for 2007 season. The Crown (I think), which has been doing the South American itinerary in the winter is leaving the fleet -- sold to Fred Olson. The Dream will be taking over that itinerary. The Wind is also leaving the fleet -- I forget her destination, and the Sun is being transferred to Hawaii to take the place of the Wind. The Spirit will be replacing the Sun in New Orleans, but no word on any ship to replace the Dream in Houston.

Here's NCL's winter season 2007-2008 schedules:

Gem from New York
Majesty from Charleston
Jewel, Pearl, and Dawn from Miami
Spirit from New Orleans
Dream to South America
Star from Los Angeles
Sun, PoA, PoAm, PoH from Honolulu

Both the Wind and Crown will have departed NCL's fleet by then. NCL on Sep 7 ordered two more new ships, with an option for a third, to be delivered in 2009, 2010, and possibly in 2011.
The Dream and Majesty may be gone too, as they ar escheduled to leave NCL by the end of 2010, so it doesn't look good for Houston until the third new ship starts service. But, if a new ship arrived before an older ship left, there would be numbers of ships to have one sail from Houston and keep next winter's schedule on the rest ofr the ships. But that's a big if.

UTE_Fan and Ron, thanks for the info. I only did a quick check for cruise leaving from Houston and didn't see anything. But combined with your info, I agree with Ron, its a very Big "IF" for them returning to Houston.

Guess we will have to support the other cruise lines. They are missing out a b big market share. Both Carnival and RCCL (and princess) seem to be able to fill their ships.

Cruise ships sailing from Galveston next winter:
Carnival Cruise Lines
Conquest with 7 day itinerary
Capacity 2974 double occupancy, maximum 3700
Ecstasy with 4 and 5 day itineraries
Capacity 2052 double occupancy, maximum 2617
Royal Caribbean
Rhapsody of the Seas with 7 day itinerary
Capacity 2344 double occupancy, maximum 2435
Voyager of the Seas with 7 day itinerary
Capacity 3114 double occupancy, maximum 3835

Every two weeks, double occupancy sailing from Galveston would be:
3(2052)+2(2974)+2(2344)+2(3114)=23020 passengers

Cruise ships sailing from Galveston this winter:
Carnival Cruise Lines
Conquest with 7 day itinerary
Capacity 2974 double occupancy, maximum 3700
Ecstasy with 4 and 5 day itineraries
Capacity 2052 double occupancy, maximum 2617
Royal Caribbean
Rhapsody of the Seas with 7 day itinerary
Capacity 2344 double occupancy, maximum 2435
Splendour of the Seas with 4 and 5 day itineraries
Capacity 1806 double occupancy, maximum 2076
Princess
Grand Princess with 7 day itinerary
Capacity 2600 double occupancy, maximum ?
Norwegian (sailing from Houston)
Dream with 7 day itinerary
Capacity 1748 double occupancy, maximum ?

Every two weeks, double occupancy sailing from Galveston would be:
3(2052)+2(2974)+2(2344)+3(1806)+2(2600)+2(1748)= 30906 passengers.

So there will be a drop off of 7886 passengers sailing from this market every two weeks,r or averaging 3943 passengers less per week from 2006 to 2007.
Both NCL and Princess will not be sailing from this market next winter. Galveston/Houston sailings have historically drawn close to the lowest fares, so I would expect the decrease in capacity, and increase demand for what's left, to cause fares to rise next winter.
Major Hint: Sail from Galveston/Houston this winter and take advantage of the lower fares.

September is still early in the fall season.
The Spirit repos to New Orleans on the cruise starting on November 3, 2007 from New York. It arrives in New Orleans on November 18.
It'll stay in New Orleans for the entire winter season, at least until Mar 30, 2008.
Where it goes on Mar 30, 2008 hasn't been published yet. It could repo anywhere, including back to New York.

Personally, I think it will be heading to take the Dream's place sailing the Baltic itineraries from Dover. Why? Because the Dream about this time heads for Los Angeles after sailing all winter around South America. NCL sent the Sea to Los Angeles prior to sending it to Star Cruises. I believe the Dream may be facing the same fate.

But, I'm only speculating. Who knows, maybe the Dream will undergo a dry dock in the Los Angeles area, then head north to either Seattle or Vancouver for summer sailings to Alaska.

We'll just have to wait and see.
