Anyone know anything about this inside cabin on the Fjord deck? I heard this is the smoking side of the ship (right side), and wondered if the cabin will smell like cigarette smoke. Also, any advice on most reputable places to purchase jewelry in St. Thomas? Thanks for any advice.

Never have sailed on the ship mentioned, but smoking on different sides of the ship is for "common areas" only, and not involved with cabins. We've sailed many cruises, and never had a smoke problem. I wouldn't be concerned about it. We don't smoke ourselves, so don't like the smell. As far as reputable jewelers in St. Thomas, there are many. We'll be there ourselves in about 3 weeks, and just can't wait. The ships will recommend Diamonds International, as well as Tanzanite International. We've gone into both at several different locations, and never once, have they had a "special" item, more of a bait and switch tactic. I know of some people that will only buy from a recommended ship location, but many others that feel like I do. I didn't personally deal with Columbian Emeralds in St. Thomas, but did in Barbados, where the prices were very competitive, wonderful quality, and superb service. I purchased a new diamond wedding band for the renewal of vows that we did on our 30th anniversary. I would suspect that this must be the same excellent service throughout the chain. Also, several excellent shops right on the pier, as well as in town. Just make sure you get a guarantee. Good luck! When we booked our cruise on the Norway for Dec 29 we asked about having a no smoking cabin. We were told smoking is allowed in any of the cabins. Whether you will smell smoke from previous people in the rooms I have no idea.

Hi,
NCL used to have smoking and non-smoking cabins, but they have done away with that policy so that smoking is allowed in all cabins now. I've stayed in "smoking permitted" cabins onboard the "Norway" twice and never noticed cigarette smoke. I'm rather strict when it comes to smoking, but everything was okay.
The 'Norway' is a lovely ship; one which I am sure that you will enjoy. She used to be called the SS France doing the Atlantic run between Le Havre and New York.
Smoking in any cabin is allowed, I but you will find in what are called 'common areas' places that are designated non-smoking. I am a non smoker myself so I understand your concerns.
As far as St.Thomas is concerned, Beware! There are many reputable jewelry dealers there, but you will also encounter the 'fast sell' operatives who will offer you among other things, stuff which I call Crapazite. Unless you have a good understanding of quality and know values, be very careful. Remember, you can not take it back! Also remember, that tax and duty free does not mean profit free. Have a great cruise. I escorted a group there some time ago and found the ship absolutely first class with many repeat customers aboard. Cruiseman

Hi,
I agree about the "Norway" - she still is my favorite ship among the many I've been on. You have to know what to expect (otherwise you might end up being disappointed) but I really love her.
I have a web site called A Tribute to the S/S "Norway", which might be of interest to people who consider booking her. The English section is still very much under construction (as are parts of the German section), but you can get an idea of the ship's history as well as about a couple of other things.
Also great is the following page which gives excellent tips for anybody considering a cruise on the "Blue Lady".
