It will be less than one month until my cruise onboard the NCL Norwegian Pearl!
I am really excited and looking forward to having a great time on the cruise. It will be my 5th cruise in total. But, it will be my very first on NCL. I have been on one Royal Caribbean cruise and been on three Carnival cruises. I don't have any idea what to expect with NCL.
So, has anyone here been on the Norwegian Pearl? Also, has anyone here been on both an NCL cruise and either a Carnival or RCCL cruise? If so to the latter, how does NCL cruises compare to Carnival or RCCL?
Any comments, opinions or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
You should have an enjoyable cruise. Trying out a new cruise line is always fun. It's hard not to make comparisons to other cruise lines, but try to stay open minded. The Pearl will have some unique features unlike the other ships you've been on. IE: the bowling alley. The Freestyle dining will be a new concept for you. Most people either like it or not. I have found NCL is very comparable to RCI and CCL. However; I do notice differences particular in entertainment. I've been on NCL six times and what I notice most is their production shows are lackluster. I'm not saying the show itself is bad, or the talent of the young dancers and singers. It's just the costumes, stag props, and back drops really lack. To me, that can really add to a shows excitement. Another area I've noticed is the buffet area. The quality of food is good, but the choice of selection lacks compared to other cruise lines. Trust me though, you will not go hungry. I also think the buffet area layout has been awkward on some of their ships, causing congestion in that area.
Overall I think they are a good product for the money. I haven't been on the Pearl but hear it's a beautiful ship. Have a great time.
Frase - Carnival and Royal ships tend to have very large and in some cases very glamorous atriums - I have not yet been on the Pearl but her sister ship the Gem has a small atrium and I believe she shares the Pearl layout quite faithfully. NCL cruisers love the Pearl and repeat many cruises on her. We loved the Gem and are very dedicated to her older sister the Dawn.
Increasingly we are becoming advocates of the NCL "Freestyle" concept of cruising. We shall be very interested in Your inpressions of it!
I'm going to be on the Pearl again in January...She is a great ship....I was on a 9 day trip last year...Only negative was some of the shows....usually NCL has some top notch entertainment, but last year it was lacking....I'm hoping it has picked up this year...This will be my 21st cruise and mostly on NCL...But my cruises on RCL, Princess and Carnival have all been great...No such thing as a bad cruise, some are just better than others...I like the buffet area on the Pearl...lots of choices and room room to graze...You will have a great time....
You get back the day we board (I'm assuming anyways). Also assuming it's a Western Caribbean? Too bad cause I'd like to get some pointers from you on this ship/cruise as we have never been on an NCL cruise either. I'm sure we'll manage just fine tho.
Frase, you will have a great time! The Pearl is beautiful. I would love to sail her one day, really soon. I saw a special on the Travel Channel about her, wow what a ship! Please let us know when you return, how you like her. The time is getting short, but the time on board will be even shorter. Bon Voyage

The Pearl is beautiful....very colorful and easy to get around....the deck chairs on the promenade deck (7) are a wonderful place to rest and relax with a book or just take a nap...get there early, they go fast;-)...The buffet is a great place to eat if you don't want to do the two formal diningrooms...you don;t have to dressup..resort casual is all you need....just no shorts, grungy T-shirts, halter tops or swimwear.....I will be on the Pearl again in January, so save some food for me...
