Cruisin' Hawaii aboard the NorWind (10/07/02) certainly presented a totally new perspective in enjoying the island flava'. The island's ambience, personality and the sweet warmth of the people, in my opinion are best enjoyed with a land-based vacation. We brought our teen son to Hawaii last July and we thoroughly enjoyed the island's beauty and activities day n'night.
HOWEVER at the cruise, we did not pack/unpack numerous times. We danced with newfound friends and imbibing til the wee hours. It's safely doable at the ship. This was our 20th cruise and the dining staff of 7 bellowed out their hearty (29th) anniversary song to us. What's great with the Wind? The hired entertainers, comedians, the Polynesian dancers were all personable and friendly. We even had a reunion with the ship's singer Hunter who was at our previous cruise at RC's Voyager of the Seas . We had a chance to sit down, joke around and interacted with all of them. At the disco and dance venues, they willingly joined us and partied together while maintaining their professional image. These folks are great. To reciprocate their friendly warmth, we ensured our written commendation to NCL corporate. Our cruise dining staff were all super. They go above and beyond their human powers to please you for the rest of the cruise...a la king. That in itself almost always ensures us a super Grand vacation. A positive view of LIFE and belief in humanity are what makes a mere existence such a sheer pleasure.
LONGER-than-a-week cruises and NCL seem to attract many goldennaires. Yup, the ship apparently had only 49 people who were below 50 years old. So for 11 nights, we got together with the majority of them and partied with DJDuane. Of course, our party ladies did their pole dance. Love casino life??.. the Wind's casino was removed for Hawaii's lawful reasons. Sorry but... the ship's dormant after 10pm. Even the cruise director joked that the 7pm dinner is the midnight snack. Midnight buffet? there's none except a chocoholics fest. However, they bring it to you by having nightly roving hors d'ouvres waiters. SHORE tours? It is more enjoyable to visit many places by renting a car. Reserve the best 'net deals ahead or do it at the ship's internet. IN summary, the 50k-ton Wind lacks the WOW appeal while emiting a melancholic aura. But our state-of-mind made this a FUN cruise. It is contrast to CCL's Fun atmosphere. Cruising... Live-it-to-d'max!!
