We are taking a 14 night South American Cruise on the NCL Sun. I'm trying to figure out how much money we need to bring along. All shore excursions etc are paid for. Can anyone help me out. How much should I plan for:

Tips?
Fuel Charge?
Photos they sell on board?
Drinks?

Are there any hidden fees I might be overlooking? Just want to be prepared!!

You only need to take money for small purchases on shore. All the shipboard expenses are charged to your account, you never need money (except for the casino and if you want to tip over and above the automatic daily charge).

As Jill said you'll need cash for the casino. For budgeting purposes you'll be charged $10 a day per person for tips (going up to $12, in January I believe), the fuel charge was included in your ticket, drinks vary but mixed drinks start at around $5 and up and on our weekend cruise my wife and I spent about $60 on the photos they sell, which of course you don't need to buy. Bon voyage!

Newlywed08- As part of the boarding process you will be required to provide a credit card to secure the shipboard account. You may also secure your account with a cash deposit.
You will then be issued your ship's card which serves as your room key and your shipboard chargecard. Except for those additional tips you choose to give those crewmembers who go above and beyond the call of duty - you won't need cash on the ship. Cash tipping is a good idea for room service, hardworking wait staff Etc. (If you do it-boy will the attention you get be great-remember a ship is a tight knit community-the better you treat the crew-the better they will treat you!)
You will need cash when you go ashore for your purchases.
Drink costs are slowly rising and the average is approaching $7.50 plus 15% for the fancy drinks. If you specify you want the beverage in a regular glass rather than a souvenier glass you'll save $2 or more. There are beverage menus in the lounges and you can get a quick feel for the cost and plan accordingly.
You will love NCL's "Freestyle"!
Above all relax and enjoy-it's a cruise!
Happy Thanksgiving-& Welcome to cruise-chat!

Bon Voyage,

BillyBuzzy

We only take about $200 cash with us on a 7-9 day and usually don't spend all of that....As has been stated, you pay for everything on the ship by your ship's card....Most ports will accept credit cards too, but for small purchases, cash works better....and I usually carry $2 bills to hand out for that extra service that gets extended by the ships crew...plus I give my room steward a $20 bill when I first meet them....works wonders for the rest of the time on board....this is in addition to the regular tip at the end of the cruise....the crew works hard and long...treat them nicely...Happy Cruising....

We also give the room steward $20.00 at the start of the cruise , works well. Last week we took $600.00 cash and after all the expenses at the airports, extra tipping, and other purchases ashore including a few beer we still brought home $350.00. We do not in general play the casino, I am not sure if cash is used there.
