Norwegian Dawn to Western Caribbean
I spent the first full week of December 2012 cruising the Western Caribbean with stops in Roatan, Honduras; Belize City, Belize; Costa Maya, Mexico; and Cozumel, Mexico. The weather was mild and the seas moderate throughout the cruise. This was My 5th cruise aboard the Dawn.....this voyage was in a Balcony Cabin on Deck 9 Forward.
The Dawn remains in fine condition with only minor touchups needed from her Boston to Bermuda season. The repositioning cruise which ran from Quebec to Tampa and sailing through the remnants of Hurricane Sandy did leave its marks upon the Dawn but the wear and tear is negligible and should be corrected by January. Balcony Railings appear to need resurfacing in many spots and the sliding doors on the balconies can use a good shot of lubricant. There is some minor buckling in the surface of the deck nearest the starboard side of the main swimmming pool on Deck 12.....this has been covered over with a mat and does not seem to be much of a problem...until someone trips!!! A few strokes with a paintbrush on a few balconies would cover any blemishes left over from the recent rough sea duty the ship has been through!! The Dawn retains her unique ambiance that invites repeat cruisers back...again and again!!
Meals were tasty and the offerings in all dining rooms were plentiful this includes the Specialty Restaurants I attended....this cruise it was Le Bistro and Cagney's. Buffet offerings were......good quality and the lines were short......Love those Omelette Stations!! In a buffet one must expect to wait a few minutes in line for custom ordered items....the wait was never too long!!
The crew and the staff remain of the same excellent quality the Dawn has enjoyed over the years and like myself...she continues to enjoy the loyalty of a higher than average number of repeat cruisers. I met several individuals who have 10+ cruises aboard her...she remains my favorite ship by far...the Dawn has never lost her unique ambiance over the years.
Entertainment was exceptional...though Bollywood and Fountains are more than a bit dated and NCL would do well to bring some new shows aboard. The Las Vegas Entertainer of the year for 2009,2010 and 2011 Greg London was aboard and filled the Main Theater to capacity with each and every show....he mixed constantly with the passengers and the crew thoughout the cruise and made a host of new fans......I look forward to seeing him in Vegas in the near future!!!
My Lady and I are booked aboard the Dawn again in May to Bermuda......WE have 3 other cruises on other cruiselines before then but returning to the Norwegian Dawn will be like returning to Our home upon Mother Ocean! She is an excellent choice for a first time or an experienced cruiser....and...with a few minor adjustments appearance wise...she can shine with the best of the cruiseships.....She is a ship where lifelong friendships can still be made.....She retains her own personality....in an age of ever increasingly larger vessels...the Dawn is a friendly Island in the Stream!!
NCL Dawn Western Caribbean 1/6/13
This was our 7th cruise, third with NCL and by far the worst.
It was like eating at Perkin's every night in the dining room... loud, noisy kitchen and wait staff was very curt and rude. Venetian was too crowded together so that we could hear three conversations around us. On the third night, as we were leaving the Hostess asked if our dinner was good so we told
her the vegetables were cold and hard (uncooked peas/carrots and green beans) and the wait staff wouldn't give us an explanation of the special. She said she would have someone call us. Didn't happen. We went to Cagney's the next night and had a great dinner ($50 additional charge) and the head of
the restaurant made the rounds and asked about our cruise experience. we told her. She made a reservation for us in the Venetian in a quiet corner the next night and gave us a free bottle of wine. Why do you have to have a problem to get good service?? It wasn't this way before.
Shore excursions are not what they say. The Scootcoupe for $149 was supposed to go around the whole island of Cozumel, stop at a beautiful beach, and be 4 hours long. Our guide, Ramon, took us to the end of the main shopping street where it turned to dirt, did a U turn, and took us to a tiny beach for snorkeling, not swimming for 1/2 hour. Then he took us back to town to his friend's tequila factory, a few shops, and tried to get us to eat
at his friend's restaurant. total 2 1/2 hours. The answer from the shore excursion desk "Well, that's all there is to Cozumel" not true.
The weather can't be helped nor the rocky seas but it seemed to be a cruise for game show fanatics and bingo and sports bar fans. The best of the cruise: Greg London entertainer and Second City.
We will not cruise NCL again.
pshoes ....... Your review of your recent cruise aboard the NCL Dawn sounds as though this cruise was not very much to your liking! You sound as though you ate in only two venues (the Venetian and Cagney's)! You are an experienced cruiser yet you make no mention of the many other dining venues aboard...most of which do not charge! You have complained about the kitchen noise in the Venetian and the crowding. You complained about cold veggies....did you not eat anything else???Did You not dine in any other Location??? Did You not dine at any other time?? The menus aboard always offer 4 standard offerings on one page and 4 Nightly specials on the other page.... all the options are well explained as to content and options...perhaps you left your reading glasses in your stateroom (I assume you can read). Your complaint was nicely addressed by the staff later on and you received a complimentary bottle of wine in the tradition of all fine restaurants to assuage your temperment over any sleight you might have received!
As an experienced cruiser you know full well that shore excursions are operated by vendors and not by the cruiseline...the proper method for achieving satisfaction through NCL would be to file an NCL comment card while onboard the ship via the Purser...Did you not learn this from your two previous NCL cruises??? As it is the amount you claim to have paid is $149 for the scoot coupe. The fee for the Coupe is $159/pp for 3.5 hours! Methinks You doth protest too much......the fact that this is your one and only posting on this website after 7 cruises suggests this to be a "Drive By" posting and should be treated as such by any reader!
