NCL Star -- Mexican Riviera

I will be on the March 13 NCL Star cruise. This is my first time on NCL. I have been on Carnival, RCCL and Princess. I choose NCL this time because of its itinerary.
How is the Freestyle like? I have read a number of reviews but they vary in almost every direction. Can anyone share their experiences with the following area?

1. Quality of Children program (age 8 and 7)?
2. Food
2.A The freebies, how do they compare with RCCL/Princess? (I don't like Carnival)
2.B Those ones with surcharge ....are they worth the additional charges?
3. Excursion ... any interesting ones for the family?

Great kids program and area. They will have a great time.

Freebies? The Star doesn't have too many freebies, but there is a lot of stuff to buy.

I would only cruise on the Norwegian Star if I had the budget to dine in the alternative restaurants nightly. They are great. The main restaurants are ho hum in camparison.
