Shore Excursions or No Shore Excursions???

My family and I are going on the NCL Star to Hawaii in July. I would like to save money and not do the shore excursions with the boat. Do you think this is a good idea? What are the best things to do on our own?

rent snorkel stuff for 6 bucks, grand cayman - same thing, people will flock to you once you get off boat with different tourist things you can do, NO EXCURSIONS definetly

I believe the original post was for opinions regarding excursions in Hawaii. It is easy to plan your own shore trips, but I have a couple of suggestions. First, if you plan to rent a car - make reservations before your leave home (and check out my suggestion regarding car rentals in my review of Maui at www.portreviews.com). Secondly, if you book or plan any excursions - make sure you do it upon arrival, or with a company that will allow you to reserve, but not pre-pay for a specific activity (that way, if for some reason the scheduled itinerary changes, or the ship is unable to dock or tender at a specific port - there is no outlay of cash).
