how long is the boardwalk, looks like a nice place - are there restaurants or such nearby?

The Malecon is roughly 15 blocks long from where it starts to the river. It is a wonderful walk, with shops, cantinas, the Cathedral, City Hall, Plaza, and restraunts, both plain and fancy.

Also take time to look at the statues along the route. Some are magnificent.
