Which are the best shore excursions offered by Pride of Aloha? Other sources?
Also, "The road to Hana" on Maui sounds beautiful but brochure says "not for bad backs", wondering why?

Hi Ottercreek, welcome to cruise-chat.

The Road to Hana, although quite beautiful, is a really long drive over some very rough terrain. (It is a less than comfortable journey.) Personally, I much preferred the view from the helicopter tour as I could appreciate the beauty, but it wasn't an all day trip - leaving a lot of time to do other things in Maui.

The road to Hana is awesome, but chock full of hairpin turns and switchbacks. It is not a relaxing drive and it takes quite a while to get there. All of the maps show that you must return on the same road that you took to get to Hana, but this is not the case. The road turns to gravel for a couple of miles past Hana and then becomes paved again so that you can actually circle the southern side of Maui. The car rental firms don't want you on the gravel portion, but I have done it a number of times.

It makes for a more interesting excursion and the way back is much faster than the road to Hana.

Thanks all for the heads up on the highway to hana trip. I too was waffling on this, and I now know that it is NOT my cup of tea. I would much rather spend my limited dollars on something more relaxing-----I just LOVE this website!

We loved the Hana highway and were lucky to do this special tour with a van for 10 persons.
Okay its not relaxing, but its worth the time and the exertions and you can see many parts of the island.

Unfortunately I dont remember how long it took, but we had more time, because we had 2 weeks for 4 islands.

However, you will enjoy everything on Maui.

We have been there in february 6 years ago and the most important thing for us was watching the humpback whales close to Maui. Thats the reason we came to Hawaii and of corse our 25th wedding anniversary.
