Transportation options at Pride of Aloha

I have read on this forum that it is best to arrange excursions privately because of the cost savings. Is there adequate transportation (Taxis or public transportation)available at each of the ports so that we don't have to worry about making arrangements ahead of time? (ie from Kahului to Lahaina and back?) Or does it make sense to rent a car for the few hours that we would be at each port?
