I certainly hope that the SS Norway will join the QE2 on that list. So far, for this year, The MS Kungsholm and the QE2 will join the ranks of the RMS Queen Mary and the SS Rotterdam V. If the SS Norway is speared, then all attention will flow towards the SS United States.

If you want to sail on her one last time, your final date for sailing is Nov 11, 2008 From London to Dubai.

Dubai is also trying to buy Barney's, a New York landmark.

As a liner fan and former QE2 passenger, I have mixed feelings about this news.

First, I am sad to read that she will no longer be plying the seas. I am also dismayed that she is ending up in Dubai, as it means I shall never see her again. I saw a television report (60 Minutes, I believe), that exposed the horrid conditions that the immigrant workers on the Dubai tourist construction project were forced to endure.

Then again, at least she won't end up like my beloved SS Norway, who remains languishing off the coast of Alang.

I think I have to let this absorb...

It's really sad this beautiful ship is not going to sail much longer, but I'm very glad she won't be broken up. That's the most terrible end for a ship. I really hope SS Norway and SSUS will follow her, as well as the SS Independence.

Maybe Dubai World should look into the idea of buying the SS United States and renovate her into a 5-Star Hotel/Museum on the Manhattan waterfront. That in itself would definately become a historic landmark. Especially if they could combine the best of Big U and the SS Nuiew Amsterdam of 1938 to create a interior art deco decour that would reflect the life and times of the 1940s to the 1950s.
