Was anyone on board the Golden Princess
around September 10th when she encontered 20
foot seas in a voyage Venice to NYC? There was
a lot of rock and roll for two days and seven
large windows on the promenade shattered. Like
to here a first hand account if anyone was there.

Yes my husband and I were on board during the tail end of Hurricane Gustav (and yes we were recording Hurricane force winds that day!) and thoroughly enjoyed the 20foot waves and watching them crash over the side of the ship!! We were on C Deck and we've had our films developed and managed to capture some speactacular waves and spray, we've yet to watch the video footage we took.. which will show us actually applauding the ocean as it threw its full weight at us!

Yes it was a very bumpy ride and on more than one occasion you did feel as though you were about to be thrown out of bed... but it was certainly the best part of what had been an awful cruise with P&O Princess (not the ports, the awful ship and staff on board!).

We apparently lost 6 or 7 windows, no one was hurt and the only reason the windows were lost was due to the twisting movement of the ship... not due to high waves breaking through them!!

This did mean a delay for us getting into New York, but that did at least mean that we sailed in at a reasonable time to see the Statue of Liberty, quite a moving experience really.

So there you have it. First hand experience of what its like to cross the Atlantic when its very rough, and I've crossed many times and never experienced conditions like that!!

This was the end of a great cruise and we were very impressed the staff and crew handled the situation so well. Many of them were experiencing some motion sickness, however, the great service continued. My husband and I are not novice cruisers (16 cruises) 12 on Princess and we have been trans Atlantic 3 times. Each of the trans Atlantic trips were extremely rough, so this was not the roughest trip we have experienced. Like flying, we are at the mercy of the weather, and sometimes the mercy is uncomfortable. Our hats off to the Captain who slowed the ship to a speed that made us late into port, however, provided a more comfortable ride. We were well taken care of by Princess as our flight schedules had to be rearranged and they provided transportation and accommodations for us for flights out of Newark the next day. We appreciated this consideration and the safe trip home. Many thanks to our favorite cruise line!
