QE2 completed her final voyage today, as she arrived at port in Dubai and will undergo conversion to a luxury hotel. And so another venerable ship with a great story leaves revenue service.

Three cheers for QE2! Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!

Hear Hear!!

Thank goodness she and Queen Mary were spared the humiliation suffered by so many of the Grand Dames.

The humiliation's on its way, though, with the upcoming amputation of her funnel.

At least my memories will be intact. Our 2003 crossing was a wonderful experience that all three of us will forever cherish. Among the highlights were meeting my favorite author onboard, having tea in the Queen's Room, enjoying the atmosphere of the Chart Room, watching sealife at play through the windows of the Caronia Restaurant, and falling asleep in a deck chair one morning and awakening to find that a steward had covered me with a wool blanket.

There was a fitting send off for the QE2. The day she left was Nov 11 2008 - the 90th anniversary of the end of World War I.

November 11 is Remembrance Day (Memorial Day) in the British Commonwealth and as a veteran of the 1982 Falkland Islands War, there was a special ceremony and fly past before she left.

Video of final farewell, portion of handover ceremony, and passenger remembrances:

Video only:BBC: QE2 ready for conversion

Story and video: BBC: QE2 handed over to new owners

If the intro gets hung up, just refresh. Also, there's wonderful audio at about the 2:00 mark.

LisaP - Thank You for the video and story leads on the QEII and her departure for and into Dubai. My Daughter and her husband were in Dubai for the grand celebrations there and were present at the arrival ceremonies. Hopefully they have taken photos for future posting.

That would be awesome BillyBuzzy! I received the email from them and was so sad I had not had the privilege to sail on her. One of my goals is to sail on one of their other ones, a true ocean liner. I was able to see the QM2 in Port Everglades and should have sailed her then, but I am still planning a voyage.
