Posted part of this on the other thread but will repost here. We really like the Sun Princess and her sister ships the Dawn and Sea Princess. They are not as large as the Grand Class so have a more intimate feeling but there are sacrafices with smaller ships in the size of the theaters, lounges, etc. There is no night club high up like on the Grand and you won't find the same type of pools. The Pizza palor is a nice addition rather than pizza by the pool. I don't know what type of cabin you have booked on the Sun but if it has a balcony they are much different on this class of ship than they are on the other Princess class ships. The balcony on the Sun, Dawn and Sea are cut out of the hull so they are not totally open. There is metal on the lower portion where the plexi glass is on the other ships and metal on both ends of the balcony thus the overall feeling is much more like a huge glassless window. Depending on where you sit on the balcony and how tall you are you may have to stand rather than sit to see the ocean.
It has always been very clean and well maintained and the service we have had has been wonderful. All Princess menus are the same the only difference comes with the head chef. Each chef has the ability to interpret how he wants to prepare the menu item so you might find some differences in the presentation or seasonings.
Having been to Alaska once by ship and twice by land my suggestion is to read about all of the ports and see what is available then decide what appeal most to you. Read the shore excursions offered by Princess to get a good idea what is offered even if you decide to do independent touring. The experience the scenery, wildlife and the Alaskan experience you will have to take excursions that get you out of the port towns. I believe you itinerary is Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. Juneau is the largest city/town with more to do close to town but the other two ports are very, very small towns that hold not much more than shops. The train in Skagway taking you up White Pass Summit and into the Yukon is extremely scenic and I would recommend that for a great Alaskan experience. If you are interested in Totems and lumberjack shows you will find Ketchikan is the place for this. But if you want to get out and see the Alaskan wilderness a Misty Fjords Wilderness Cruise or Flight would be unforgettable.
