It all depends on what you want to do. Shopping, cab fare, tips, food, drinks, etc. You can use your credit cards for most items, however, you need to let them know you may be making large purchases out of the country before you leave. We usually take $1500 per week when we go.

Interesting question!

I think that for some people, very little cash is necessary. Most things can be put on a credit card.

You want to have some singles/fives handy for if you order room service or champagne/drinks to your room, or if you want something above and beyond from your room steward. It can help to tip a bit in cash in advance. (We ask for many extra pillows.)

Porters when you begin and end your trip want cash tips. I don't know how the casino works; I've never spend much time there.

Simple vendors in ports of call probably want cash......

Brian and I prefer to tip all of our people in cash in an envelope at the end of our cruises. Over all, we use around $200 to $250 for that. I don't think we've ever had more than $500 per week on us.....

Hope that helps.

Bon Voyage!

We always habe 100 $ in 1 $ bills and 10 5 $ bills, 10 10 $ bills, totally not more than 200 $ in cash.
Lana wrote it before, you need it for the tips and for independand tours in port.
But if you will pay the gratuities at the end of the cruise cash, you need more. Calculate about 10 - 11 $ per day to cover all the gratuities for stateroom attendant, waiter, ***. waiter, head waiter.
One simple thing to get more cash, is to go in the casino and they give you cash on your seapass account, without extra costs.

If we buy some more expensive things in the ports, we pay with our creditcard.

I use a debit card with a good amount of cash in the account and a high daily withdrawal level. This way, if I need cash I can put my hands on it anywhere in the world without having to carry it with me. It works great. When you are traveling internationally, you generally get a very good exchange rate from the ATMs rather than the currency exchanges.

Have a great cruise.

As the others have stated cruise money varies.

Based upon a budget, plans or needs everyone does things differently.

I can tell you I have changed over the years the way I handle money. Started out always using travelers checks, very little cash.
The moved to mostly cash with a credit card back-up. Now I primarily use my credit card.
But, as others mentioned bring small bills for tipping, taxis, etc.

It is possible to spend very little cash & have your shipboard account go to your credit card. While if you need to watch your spending then you can pay cash.
If you do not shop or drink your expenses will be little.

The standard tipping with Princess is $10 per person per day for the cruise. This goes to your ship account. Of course you can choose to eliminate this option & do tipping on your own.

Do hope you have a wonderful cruise.
BON VOYAGE
