Hello all, I am a cruise newbie, and will be going on my first cruise on the Sun Princess, inside passage Alaska cruise, late August 2007. I have selected anytime dining and would like any input about how to handle tips for waiters, since I'm assuming that I won't necessarily have the same waiter every evening.

Hi, Princess charge $10 per day, per person for tips. Therefore there is no need for you to worry about tipping. This is added onto your bill.

Thanks so much for the quick reply; would it be appropriate to leave a [small] tip for a specific waiter who gave extraordinary service during the meal?

I failed to mention, that any extraordinary tipping is usually done at the end of the cruise, like the final evening aboard.

Thanks so much for the advice and comments. I have already learned so much from cruise-chat; what a great way to share information and experiences! Any other tips for my first cruise will be greatly appreciated!

Although you pay the $10 per person per day, we found much better service when you do tip for dinner.

Albertagirl, did you have the same table every night at Anytime? Did you tip each night? I'm trying to figure how you got better service by tipping for dinner.

Thanks.

I would be interested in hearing that also.

We have found that it is the "luck of the draw" in getting the best service. You do get more personalized service, probably a little better, when you take an interest in the wait staff. We have had anytime dining since it started and use the dining room for all meals whenever possible so get to "know" many of the wait staff. We have found that those that are going to give good service will give it without any "additional" tipping. The worst service we ever had was for traditional dining before the advent of the $10/day being put on your obc.
