We are leaving for Alaska in 3 days! My husband wants to know if he can wear is brand new nice jeans with a nice shirt and/or sweater on the "smart casual" nights.

Hi digdmr,

There is quite a debate on this subject here on Cruise-Chat. On non-formal nights in the dining room it is customary to wear a shirt with a collar, no jeans, no ball cap and no shorts.

There are a few rebels who attempt to wear jeans and depending on the dining room staff and how they're enforcing the dress code he may get in.

Have a great cruise!

Cheers, Neil

Direct from Princess.com, the answer is no.

(Scroll down to Onboard Attire.)

Jeans may be worn in the evenings for dinner at the buffet, but are not permitted in the dining room.

Thanks Neil and Lisa,

My husband just informed me that he has outgrown some of his slacks. It looks like we will make a quick trip to get him a couple more nice looking slacks and he has plenty of nice shirts to dress them up. I tend to be a little more formal than most people,so I wasn't sure if "nice" jeans were okay.

Thanks for the good wishes, we are looking forward to the cruise. We just might be escorting the lost whales Delta and Dawn up to Alaska! I hear they are heading towards San Francisco (which is where we are leaving out of on Thursday).

You're welcome, digdmr.

I was in San Francisco a few days ago on business, and was following the tale of Delta and Dawn on the news. I'm glad to hear they're finally moving!

Enjoy the cruise, as well as SanFran!

I've been wearing my "nice" jeans for years & have never had a problem. (not on formal nights)

My husband has worn good jeans to dinner other than formal nights, and not one word has ever been said. There was one night that I was tired from a long day of onshore excursion and I just left my jeans on. Again not a problem. Not everyone is a khaki kind of person. I appreciate Princess lines for that.

Yes, for anyone that has an upcoming cruise on Princess, during our recent Alaskan cruise, we did wear nice jeans a couple of nights just because we were too tired to change. I put on a nice top over it and my husband would dress his up with a nice shirt. Nothing was ever said to us, in fact I think they were just happy we showed up! Our table for 10 turned out to be a table for 4 every night! Apparently, on an Alaskan cruise the second seating is not the popular one.

I've been wearing jeans for years on casual nights & never had a word said to me- of course there not worn & frayed but look similar to a pair of Dockers.

A nice pair of Black jeans works too.....

We were on RCL ship this winter and jeans were worn on Formal Night by a few...nothing was said..but did look out of place...but to some, Jeans are formal wear....Have a Safe and Grand cruise...
