I was just wondering if anyone knows if there is any cell phone coverage on the Diamond's mexican rivera route using Cingular? My husband & I want to call our kids at home to check on them periodically. We had excellent coverage on our Alaskan cruise 2 years ago even while we were sailing.

You probably need to check with your wireless provider to see if coverage is available. But don't worry you can call the kids when you arrive at port, there are usually plenty of pay phones at the port, sometimes its cheaper to go that way with a phone card then to pay the roaming charges for a wireless phone.

I have Verizon & did not get much coverage in Mexico. The calling cards off the ship will probably be your best bet.

My wife and I have T Mobile and have great coverage in Mexico (and just about everywhere else). You have to have the International feature enabled, but it works great. In fact she is on the Explorer of the Seas with Nancy Norris right now and I have been able to talk with her every port day. It isn't all that expensive either.

Tom,
Thanks for the suggestion. I will try that next cruise.

I recently sailed to the Mexican Riviera and the cell coverage was spotty. No reception on the days were at sea. While in port we had to dial in special numbers first, prior to calling out and it turned out the calls were very expensive...our cell bill was about $100 CAD for about 8 calls! Would have been much cheaper to call while in port on a pay phone with a calling card.

Tom,
Please report back to us when Joanie gets her bill. She had no idea what the cost would be and I know she also used it on the Panama Canal cruise. Would love to get a ballpark figure for a per minute cost on average.

I know this post is on the Princess forum, but thought it was interesting that Royal Caribbean announced that it would have cell phone service on all ships in the fleet by the end of summer at a cost of $1.50 per minute.
