Today my wife and I returned from what can only be described as the worst holiday we have ever been on - a 14 day roundtrip Southampton to Southampton on Sea Princess.

It seems strange now to say the holdiay started well. The joining process in Southampton was very good - 20 minutes from arriving in our own car to being on board. It all goes downhill from there!

Firstly our cabin was about as clean as a central London public toilet. You could write your name in the dust on the higher shelves. The urine stains in the bathroom were also quite unexpected. For a ship that has been in the news over passengers having the 'cruise virus' this was not a great start. The steward over the course of the two weeks rather than clean seemed to want to charge us for drinks we had not taken. We tried to explain this to him but his English was just not up to the mark.

As you might imagine the above led to a trip to the Pursers desk. I was told it was not their issue and I would need to talk to the steward. This after queueing for 20 or so minutes.

Next the tours. In a number of the ports that this ship called at one was not allowed to walk from the dock. Princess now charge for the minibus service unlike most of its peers. Perhaps times are changing but when ones pays one might expect a better service - indeed not a 2 hour queue in Livorno as the drivers were having lunch. No apology or compensation from Princess until after a discussion with the ever more unhelpful Pursers desk. Finally no desk selling water when going on tours (always seen in the past), passangers not being asked to clean their hands on returning the ship ( as on previous cruises).

There were a large number of children on he ship of which an element were allowed to run like a group of ferel alley cats. Every night we had groups of them playing on the stairwells and doing the things that teenagers so often do in all sorts of public areas. This with Princess staff walking by. Indeed passengers themsleves had to tell the kids to be quiet or play elsewhere. Again complaints were made to the Pursers desk but no action was taken.

Not one breakfast, lunch or dinner went by without hearing another complaint. Indeed on the final day our table waited 35 minutes before being served breakfast.

Our first cruise was on the Sun Princess some four years ago. This was a great cruise and we have so many fond memories and was followed by another great cruise on the Sapphire Princess 6 months later. Princess have in our opinion gone from being one of the best to the worst which perhaps muct be put down to the new parent company. We will never cruise Princess again.

Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience. We too felt that maybe it was the parent company after having a wonderful cruise on the Sea, and a not so great one on the Sun. However, we tried them again and went on the Dawn. We had a marvelous time. Last year we were on the Sea, she was still as lovely as our first cruise. She had just come back from P & O and had half of the casino removed because they stated that the European crowd did not gamble much. They had planned on her returning to P & O at that time, so did not plan on bringing her back to the American configuration. I guess they changed their minds, because she's still scheduled to sail for Princess through next year. With all of this being said, I wouldn't discount Princess on one bad experience. I would, however, send a concise complaint to the corporate office. The unruly children are not the fault of the cruise line, it is the fault of the children's parents. If your room was not cleaned to your liking, the purser should have made sure that the head of housekeeping was contacted and the situation rectified. When we were on the Sea last year, we had hand santizers all over the ship. We were not reminded to use them, they were in plain view for those who chose to use them. Ships are no different than any city in the world, when someone brings a virus on board, others will catch it no matter how much cleaning and disinfecting goes on, people spread germs. Best wishes!

I'm a bit confused. Sapphire Princess debuted in 2004, the year following the line's acquisition by Carnival Corp. Was it a different ship you cruised 3 1/2 years ago, or was the Sapphire Princess cruise more recent?

The "Parent Company" of Princess is Carnival Corporation, often confused by those who are trying to put down Carnival Cruise Lines. The parent company Carnival Corporation, also owns the luxury and premium cruise lines of Seabourn, Cunard, Holland America, and Windstar. All which provide a wonderful cruise product. So I hardly would blame the "Parent Company" for the problems with your recent cruise.

Other cruise lines are charging for transfers in port. I recently was on Celebrity's Century in the Baltic. Last year I was on the same cruise and the transfers were free in each port. This year they charged $5 per person each way. If your dining room experience was lacking you should have spoken with the Maitre'd. It sounds like the Purser's desk was also lacking in customer service. I hope you wrote this on your critique so headquarters can address any consistent problems.

I am so sorry you had a bad experience. I have done 8 Princess cruises and many of them after Carnival purchased Princess. Princess is still our favorite cruise line.

I like being able to go to "dinner" when I want to versus a 1st seating or 2nd seating schedule. Plus Princess is not as formal as Celebrity and Holland America. Princess is usually a younger crowd.

All it takes is one bad experience and you will "swear" never to use that Cruise Line again. Our bad experience was with NCL and I am in no hurry to book with them again.

I agree you should write headquarters. Clean rooms, etc -- should of been the norm.

Hopefully enough of us Princess fans will reply about our "good experiences" and you will reconsider going on another Princess cruise if the itenary interest you.
