Denali Explorer Aug-Sep 2011 Recommendations

My wife and I have booked 12-day Denali Explorer Cruisetour sailing on Coral Princess (Anchorage to Vancouver BC) after land tour @ Denali & McKinley Princess Lodges. Ports are Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan.

Have cruised Carribean w/RC-Great!! First cruise with Princess and first visit to Alaska.

Anyone done this cruisetour recently at this time of year?

Will appreciate recommendations, shipboard tips and shore excursions.

Wish I could help, but haven't done Alaska. I have sailed Princess many times, but not the Coral. In fact, Princess is my favorite line. Be sure to try the International Cafe, the pizza is the best at sea, and if they have the Sanctuary on board the Coral try a half day pass there.

Haven't been of much help, but did want to welcome you to CruiseReviews. We have many members that have done the Alaska itinerary, so I hope someone will be able to assist you.

Have a wonderful time and I hope you enjoy Princess as much as we do!

You'll have a great time. Princess is very similar to Royal Caribbean, so I'm sure you'll enjoy the shipboard experience.

Alaska is an amazing destination. Alaska is a huge state, so I'm glad you're doing a 5-day pre-cruise tour in Denali. The distances are large and it's much less frenetic to spread out those trips over a few days.

There is so much to see and do at the stops your ship will be making. If you look at the selection of excursions, it covers every interest, every time span, etc., you could want.

The weather should be cool that time of year, so make sure you pack clothes you can layer to stay warm. The coldest days will be the days you sail close to the glaciers. You'll want to be outside, with binoculars, on those days, so bring appropriate clothing.

Welcome to cruise-chat! Three years ago we did the same land/cruise tour that you are doing. What a wonderful experience! The next year we did the cruise only. Both trips were fantastic, but the land tour is really special because you get to see the interior of Alaska and enjoy the wildlife there.

As Sandy said, each port offers a huge variety of excursions. In the opinion of many people who have been to Skagway, the White Pass Railway is a "must do". We took the RR to the top of the mountain and the bus down. The bus stopped at Liarsville and it was a fun experience. The train ride is really, really nice and I would highly recommend it.

Whatever excursions you choose to do, seeing Alaska is an awesome experience.
