The prices of the excursions look astronomical! Has anyone any experience of them? Is it possible to do your own thing at the stop offs?

David - I can't give you a specific answer to your question as I've not been on a cruise to the Baltics. However - just keep in mind that you will be in a strange place with people most likely speaking a language you don't know; if you find you'll be concerned with returning to the ship on time - stick to either ship's excursions or a very reputable tour guide.

It would help if you posted your ports of call. My Baltic cruises went from Amsterdam to Olso, Stockholm, Helsinki, St Petersburg, Tallinn Estonia, and Copenhagen. In St Petersburg if you don't do a ships tour or a tour through a licensed Russian Tour Operator, then you must get your own Russian Visa. That can be pricey. Tallinn is small and very walkable. In the Scandinavian countries you can do the ports on your own. They also have hop on/hop off busses.

Hi. When we were there the weather was never hot. You are going a month or so earlier than us and you may find it to be warmer but I suggest you take some warm clothing and a jacket/fleece to wear on your excursions. We always wore warm clothing and we also took umbrellas as you are likely to get some rain at some time. Have a good time.
