ALMOST,,,booked a Princess cruise,,,BUT
after looking at all the details,,,such as no discount for Business air,,quoted same as I could get on web...then felt "nickel and dimed" for extra charges on tips,drinks,restaurants,excursions,,etc........... ....decided to stick with so called "luxury" line that inc. all of above...with smaller ships and all inclusive..for us it just made better sense...sad,we take at least 2 cruises ea yr..and this sounded good till I explored it further...

It's really all a matter of perspective how a person looks at something. ....I wouldn't consider gratuities in the nickel and diming category. Princess is a Premium cruise line and their profit margin isn't anywhere near what Regent cruise lines would be. Princess could hardly afford to offer free upgraded business airfare with their profit margin. Princess charges less for the cabin and makes it up on photos, casino, shore excursions, spa treatments, pay restaurants, and drinks. Those are all things that you "choose" and control how much you spend. Regent charges a high premium upfront and includes many of these items, and you're paying for them whether you use them or not. Price aside; the real distinction between these two cruise lines is the non-tangibles......the attentive service, the ambience, and the small ship feel. Luxury means different things to different people. It's about the value a person feels they receive. Luxury is a mind set.

Maybe it was just the particular cruise;;;
was looking at Ocean Princess to Tahiti,,,the balcony room and charge was similar,,but not expecting full mark up on air,,then looked at details I mentioned,,,and for this particular cruise it just wasnt much of a bargain..

Just mentioned it,,,because its important to really know all the details before you book,,so no surprises...

For instance,,,Oceania Marina had same price,,for similar room,,inc.air,,not Business..ON SALE for same price as OP...didnt mean as put down of this particular cruiseline,,or non "luxury" lines per se...just good to really check around..sorry,,no "ruffled feathers" I hope

No ruffled feathers at all. :) I agree, it's always good to check around. You never know what sales might be out there. It does make sense the OP in Tahiti could demand a higher per diem since there is little competition in that market.
Supply and demand. So it's always good to compare as you did.

Interesting post...we almost detect some bitterness about Princess. The reality is that it's just business and cruise prices vary all over the place for almost any itinerary. We agree with the OPs philosophy of shopping around among the various options. Having cruised on 12 different lines we never get upset because one line has a better deal...(that is usually the one we book). All the mass-market lines (such as Princess) use "yield management" programs to maximize profits and prices (as well as amenities) simply depend on supply vs demand for specific cruises. And by the way, we saw the Marina this summer (docked next to us in Copenhagen) and ship looked magnificient. We are familiar with the Ocean Princess which is one of the old "R" ships of Renaissance (like the older Oceania ships) and as much as we enjoy those smaller ships we would probably pay a premium just to be on the new Marina.
