California Coastal

We are cruising on the Crown Princess in April 2014 on a California Coastal cruise. We have driven the coast road several times and the scenery is spectacular. We are considering doing the drive again after the cruise is over but question its value if we have seen the scenery from the shore. My question is, how close does the ship hug the coastline or do you just come near the coast when you arrive at each port? Thanks for your advice.

We've never done a California coastal cruise but if it's similar to a Mexican coastal it's not that close. Bring binoculars. It's nowhere as good as driving down the coast.

Even with binoculars you will not be able to make out any details of the coastline.

You will be seeing the coastline as you arrive at each port. The drive will give you the up close and personal feel.
We did enjoy the cruise and ports.
