Is it safer and less expensive...to book excursions thru local resorts...ie..Dunns Falls, Ocha Rios

Less expensive? Maybe. Safer? Absolutely not; especially in Ocho Rios.

At Dunns River Falls if you book an independent tour (ie local taxi) you'll be dropped off at the falls & will do it on you own but they hound you to death trying to sell you all their junk after the climb. It might be a little more expensive to do a ships tour but in terms of saved aggravation worth the extra money. I'm not sure but I think you still have to utilize their guides who escort you up the falls (and expect a big tip for their services).

Jlmkey, Jamaica would not be a place to do on your own. Cozumel, is a different story. Grand Cayman, if that's one of your ports, is ok, too. There are some places I just would not recommend doing a local booking and Ocho Rios id definitely one of them.

We'll also be there next week & walk to the Island shopping center for something to do. We've seen the island a few times previously & just want to stretch our legs & get some exercise.

Hi Jlmkey,

I agree with everyone else. Jamaica not the safest place to be touring with anyone other than your cruise tour group. Do go to Dunns Falls but take the cruise tour. Even when you reach the top of the falls, you will still be hassled to death as you make your way through the shanty town but at least you will be with your fellow passengers and there is always safety in numbers (at least that is what they say). Cheers.

If you book through Princess there used to be two different tours to get to the falls. One was by bus, which entered at the top of the falls & you walked past all the shops, walked to the bottom of the falls and proceeded to climb. They didn't bother to try & sell you junk on the way in but when you're leaving it was a totally different story. You'll almost be held hostage at each shop on the way out.
If you opt for the tour which goes to the falls by catamaran, it docks at the bottom of the falls & you begin the climb from there. You exit the falls at a point where there aren't any shops & then walk back down to get the catamaran for the return trip without passing them. Of course you'll still have to deal with the guides who will insist on a healthy tip & won't take no for an answer.
