Dave, we cruised on the Elation out of San Pedro, CA in 2000. it was another one of those "Sea Letter" cruises. We like the size of the Fantasy class ships.
The main reason we booked is the port. We did our B2B on the Fantasy for New Year 2010 and really enjoyed Mobile. Just wish they had more choices and slightly longer cruises. Do you think there will be a time with more ships and cruise lines in the 'Panhandle' area?

Fast dancing is the second best form of exercise, slow dancing leads to the first!
Last year the Elation did a few 6 and 7 night cruises from Mobile. We did a 7-night in July. I do dearly wish another line would come to the panhandle and provide something different, and on longer sailings. But the problem is the limited itineraries, and no doubt Carnival makes more money doing 4 and 5 nighters than just doing longer cruises. Onboard revenue is higher with the shorter cruises.
With all our cruises, going on the Elation last summer was our first on a Fantasy-class ship. We really liked it. Nice sized ship with more stuff than the old Holiday offered.
