Totally agree with unamused. We were booked on the same cruise and got a telephone call mid December informing us the cruise was off. We had paid the full deposit 7 months ago and have never been on a cruise before so had booked everything in advance and were really looking forward to it.
So in addition to Royal Caribbean having the benefit of our free cash for seven months it also cost us another $120 to re book flights!
I e mailed a complaint, got absolutely no acknowledgement at all, telephoned their so called customer service line to be advised by a rude clerk that flights or cancellation costs were not their problem and that they had refunded the deposit to my card already, no apology, no compensation at all. They apparently have a policy of responding to complaints within 30 days, we won't be holding our breath! In our opinion RC have shown a total lack of professional conduct and this sort of sorry standard of "customer neglect" needs to be properly aired. We will be advising everyone we know to steer clear of this company!

Nugget, it's unfortunate that you encountered this situation. However, the vast majority of cruise lines have the same policy. Their contention is that they sell air seats to get you to the cruise, and if you choose to buy it elsewhere, they indeed don't have any responsibility to refund any of your costs to change it - even if you bought it elsewhere to save money, which is usually the case. Some of that is due to the airlines' own rules, of course. That doesn't excuse rude behavior on the part of the RCCL staffer that you talked with, but I'm afraid things aren't any different with other cruise lines - except hopefully for their demeanor!
