The days the ship is at sea all day is the days they have the formal nights.

Formal night is usually on the second night.

I thought this too Cocktails 42 but having just returned from the Brilliance sailing the mediterranean the 3 formal nights were held on port days. Didn't go down well with those on early dining if they had an all day excursion booked

In June, the formal nights were the second night (Monday) and then Friday night.

They typically try to do the formal nights on sea days, but some itineraries do not have enough or any sea days because they go to so more ports, so these they have to sprinkle in through out the cruise.
