I am a first timer with RCCL. I have booked my flight through them. I am traveling from LAX to Miami. What kind of flight will RCCL book me on? Is it usually a red eye? Do they have us fly in the night before?

I'm flying to Ft. Lauderdale from LAX and it's 4 hours 45 minutes.

It most likely will not be a red eye, but it will be a cheaper option, such as a one stop in lieu of a direct.

Hey Teach,
For a small fee, I believe $35, you can ask your travel agent or RCI if you booked directly through them, and get custom air arrangements, choose a couple flights that work for you, try the major booking online sites (expedia, travelocity or orbitz). A non-stop flight from LAX to MIA shouldn't be to hard to find, and it would mean alot to me NOT to have a layover or red eye flight. So the $35 might be well spent.

For future reference, make sure you do your research before you book any airfare through the cruise line. When I booked my cruise, Royal Caribbean wanted more money for the airfare than for the cruise, so I booked my airfare separately through the airline directly and it was significantly cheaper. Cruise line airfares are rarely a bargain.

Michael thanks for the feedback. I compared airline prices and continue to do so. The prices are about the same only a $30 dollar difference. I find this comforting since they will be providing transportation to and from the port, in addition to them making arrangements if something goes wrong.

As you become more experienced(and knowing the addiction of cruising) booking your own flights, and arriving at least a day early may become a cheaper option. But I think the protection of booking through the cruiseline, with the option of custom air arrangements, provides a comfort level, that makes planning a first time cruise painless. Good for you, checking prices and comparing, knowing also provides some comfort too. Miami is a beautiful place to leave from, get out there on deck and enjoy your sail away !!!

I booked my first flight with RCCL back in 1999 and I have always done it seperately everytime after. I have found out that it is much cheaper!! I live in Chicago and I don't know if that is the reason on RCCL just gauges the prices to make a profit. Example our cruise in May they wanted about 500rt (inclding transfers) I booked directly through Continental and paid around 200rt and as far as the transfers we are going private becuase of the cost. For a first timer that is probably the best option. Our first cruise I believe we had a 6am flight or so into Vancouver but they won't be flying you in the previous night. Also, I always fly in the day before because of glitches with airlines and weather restrictions. I would rather pay for a hotel the night before and and know my flight wont be delayed or worse cancelled and actually some hotels will take you directly to the pier and then you don't have to pay for transfers.
