Can you give me an idea as to the size of the room safe? I would like to take my digital SLR camera and zoom lens with us but wouldn't want to have to carry it at all times. Do you think it would fit in the room safe (the camera is roughly 5"H x 7"W x 8"D)?
I wouldn't worry about leaving things out in the cabin. I routinely leave laptops, cameras, lenses, out in the cabin and don't worry about them. The only thing we put in the safe is jewelry, passports, wallets, and cash.
You can trust the cabin attendants and it isn't as though burglars routinely book cruises.
Thanks for the info, Dave. Knowing that others leave things like this in their cabins is certainly reassuring. Also, glad to hear that the attendants are trustworthy.
But should I feel so inclined, seems that the camera would fit in the safe, too.
Looks like I can check off another concern for my maiden voyage!
I am certain the camera and accessories would fit in the safe. But ever since cruise ships started putting safes in cabins, I have only used them for exactly the same things Dave mentioned--jewelry, passports and travel documents, wallets and cash.
In 30+ years of cruising I have never had anything go missing.
I fully agree with what has been said regarding room safety... However, I have a fairly large SLR (Canon 5D) and I have put that and a large zoom in the safe... I have also kept it out in the room but in its bag in the closet. No reason to leave it out and tempt anyone.

I agree with Dave that you can trust the stewards. They are assigned to you cabin, so if something goes missing they know they are going to be the first to be accused. They would much rather have their job then you camera.
That being said, even if you don't put it in the safe, I would still consider putting it in a drawer, in the closet etc to keep it hidden from view. The stewards do prop the door open while they are cleaning. They may need to go into the cabin next door or out to get linens or something and some COULD walk by and see your camera sitting there and grab it. Its unlikely, but a possibility. We wouldn't want you to be blaming a steward for someones dishonesty.
