Another option is buying internet minutes and having the people email you back about your dog, our kids etc.

We just got back on The Mariner and while we were in Jamacia our cell phone worked fine . I didn't know what the cost would be so we kept it short , but we were able to call home .

We have been on St. Thomas and St. Kitts, no cellphone calls to germany possible. Good connections in Puerto Rico, Barbados and St. Maarten.
Ive heard from some american passengers, that their american cellphones also got no contact, from other passengers well.
I think, it depends on the provider you have.
