I read a disturbing post on Cruise Critic's website about a woman who placed her daughter in the Adventure Ocean program on Freedom. Here is the link in case anyone would like to read it:

We are taking our 4 year old son on the Freedom. I am wondering if anyone else has had any negative situations with the Adventure Ocean program?

Thank you,
Linda

Hi Linda,

Weīve been on the Grandeur about two weeks ago. DD is 7 years old and we are German. Therefore she doesnīt speak English but she does understand quite a lot (if you ask her for her name or age she will answer). She has attended other kidsī programs in English before. And she also spent 4 hours with US friends of us without any problems. We did tell the counselors that she wonīt speak but that she does understand English and that they should speak to her in short and easy sentences. We especially bought some walkie talkies just in case she will have any language problems. We gave it to her the first morning and never used them again for AO during the rest of the cruise.

O.k., she wasnīt able to participate in any games which required a lot of talking. But she didnīt have any problems with the rest of the program and didnīt want to leave. She is learning English at school (1st grade, itīs more learning songs and groups of words like just now they are learning the parts of the body). She did participate in the pirates party and also learned the song the kids performed in the theater.

She and we had no problems at all. Iīm just wondering why that 3 years old girl has been "striked" as on the Grandeur in that age group every parent got a beeper to call the parents in case of any problems.

I thought the program was very nice and well organized (except for the "paperwork", they should use the seapass to sign kids in and out). First you had to fill in a form which asked for dietaries, any sort of medication and special needs. Then you have to sign in the kids each time they are coming to the program. You have to leave the names of those people who are allowed to pick the kids up again (or if the kid is allowed to leave on its own). Sure after a couple of days the councelors did know the parents but anyway they had a look on your seapass.

wesnlin- I wouldn't worry too much about it. Unless you think your 4 year old is a behaviour problem, he should be just fine. I'm not sure that exact story behind the post in your link (I'm not sure the poster knew exactly what the problem was either. But either the AO councilor was new and over reacted or the child did something more than simply not wanting to get off the slide. They have to have some form of discipline system in place or their would be big problems. Can you imagine all those 4 year old running around with no means of control? If they didn;t have the threat of "strikes" ,they would not have any authority over the kids. This also allows them to let the parents know that their kids misbehaved somehow. (Just letting you know.. little Johnny got a strike today because he hit another kid.. better talk with him because if he strikes out he won't be allowed back in.)

I wouldn't take one parent's complaint as being justification for trashing an entire program. We have never had problems with Adventure Ocean - and our son also had tubes in his ears and speech problems when he was younger. My impression from the linked post is that the mom had a certain attitude too - which may be part of the problem.

Seems like the problem has been solved. "Strikes" have to be signed by the parents. The little one never got a real "strike". The councelor is on her second cruise and doesnīt know how itīs going yet.
