We are going to be on the Freedom next year leaving from Miami. We was wondering if a bad storm should come up what will happen? I have heard that the ship could bypass a port and go to the next one right? If that happens, will it cut a 7 day cruise short, getting back to Miami days earlier than expected?

Thank you,
Linda

It depends on the severity of the storm. It also depends what has gone on with the cruise prior to yours if it also was in a storm. Last year we had several back to back storms. The cruise line will never put the passengers or the ship in harms way. I have been on cruises during a storm and we just reversed the itinerary and never had a problem. On another one we had to miss a port. It would be wise to be sure you have Travel Insurance.

In our case, it made our 7 day cruise a 9 day cruise. In 2004 we were on the Mariner and Hurricanes were everywhere. We ended up making an unscheduled stop at Labadee. It was great. Our favorite stop. The passengers that were supposed to board on Sunday had a choice of taking a shorter cruise for less money and some other perks or a full refund with reduced fare for their next cruise.

When Wilma hit Miami I lost two days of my cruise because the ship couldn't come into port. I still got on the ship, and was refunded most of my money. We booked the next week while on the ship. The people on the cruise during the hurricane got an extra two days for free. I wouldn't let a storm worry you, because it probably won't happen. We've been on over 30 cruises, and last year was our first hurricane.

I have been on cruises during bad weather, they will sail around the storm sometimes, maybe not stop at an island if the sea is too choppy for the tenders. Missed Grand Cayman last time. We were coming back through the Bermuda Triangle on Friday the 13th with a full moon and there was a gail with 85mph wind gusts. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a catagory 1 hurricane has min.75mph winds. It wasn't really too bad considering, but they closed all the decks the whole day.
