LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A methane gas leak aboard a cruise ship has killed three crew members and slightly injured ten others.
It happened shortly after nine this morning aboard the Monarch of the Seas, a Royal Carribean ship that had docked in San Pedro with 2,500 passengers and 850 crew members aboard.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, a pipe leaked about five gallons of sewage and sent methane gas into a starboard propeller shaft where the crew was performing routine maintenance. The incoming methane pushed displaced the air in the shaft and the crew members were overcome. members.
Three died and others complained of vomiting, nausea and teary eyes. Two of the injured were ship's doctors who were trying to help the others.
No passengers were hurt.
