Hello-

We are departing on the 7 night med. cruise
Aug. 2nd. We are definitely doing a booked excursion for Rome. I do wonder though, has anyone ever done the Amalfi/Pompeii excursion? There are several options and I'm wondering if it's best and easy to do it on our own my train or is it best to book the excursion.

Please Help! Thanks!!

Actaully both Rome and Pompeii are easy enough to do on your own. Visit our "European port" chat for more info (do a search on Pompeii) also consult the Italian train guide in the FAQ section. There is lots of details on how to do what you want there.

all I remember from our med cruise is that rome is quite a distance by train from the sea port, some others might just confirm this - but a wonderful city

I just returned from a 12 night med cruise on RC. BEWARE!!! The port is a little over an hour train ride to Rome. Plan on longer due to train schedules, they are late, all the time. I would definitely do a excursion and not do it on your own. that way you know the ship wont leave you behind.
pompeii- we did the pompeii tour in the morning and then went into naples and had pizza and beer. prepare to be VERY hot in pompeii. we were miserable. let me know if you have any other questions. we left out of rome on the legend.

Dear Royal Cruiser-
I hope you had a wonderful time on your cruise!
Tell me, did you do both Rome and Pompeii with ship excursions? Or, did you do it on your own and have these difficulties?

Any more advice would help! Of course, hate to get left behind!!

Also, as far as on the sailing day, do you have any recs as far as reserving a pool chair early?

Thanks!!

If you look at an earlier post here, on some, if not all, RCI ships they are cracking down on holding chairs. They seem to be allowing 45 minutes grace time if a chair is "unoccupied." That being said I'm not sure if I would recommend trying to reserve a chair, because your stuff may be gone when you go back up to the pool deck after reserving your chair.
